Show The PlayboxIn the Playbox on University Street are presented the most experimental of the University of Utah's plays. The Playbox produces theatre-in-the-round, in which the audience sits around the acting area. This tends to create a closer audience-actor relationships, as the feet of some people sitting on the first rows can well testify. But some very interesting effects have been achieved in the way of lighting and sound. One could only wish that similar effects could be accomplished in decor and costumes. But this serious lack is probably due to the type of plays which are produced. In the Playbox, the Kingsbury Hall tradition of Broadway productions determines the choice of plays. Thus, this year, the Playbox produced such Broadway "long-runs" as "No Time For Sergeants," "Anastasia," and William Saroyan's "The Cave Dwellers."Of course, these productions are a means of providing valuable acting, directing, and technical experience to theatre students, since the leads are not given to Broadway Stars as they are in the Kingsbury productions.Ralph Margetts directs rehearsals for the Utah production of "Anastasia."261 |
