Show STUDENT GOVERNMENTSENATEThis year, the University of Utah's Senate established further student representation in the A.S.U.U. chambers, by putting itself on a par with the Executive Council, the body of student officers which had previously been the last word in the student legislation. In acknowledging these newly found powers, the University's administration increased the Senate's apportionment fund from fifty dollars last year to almost 1500 dollars for the year 1958-59.The Senate members busied themselves during their terms in office with such tasks as knitting, overcoming minor scandals, and investigating such matters as qualified teaching, the merits of the honor system, and student parking on campus. Though these problems seemed sufficient in themselves, the Senators ventured into the criticism of the University's daily newspaper in the name of improvement, and student affairs went happily ever after.Well known student leader, John Covey, assumed Senate Presidency for '58-'59.Members of this year's Senate included: Mary McEntire, Kent Vincent, Lois Sumner, Whit Young, Juanita Hansen, Pat Eddington, Anne Dalgleish, Ken Clark, Sue Adams, Sherry Beasley, Nancy Cannon, Pat Beane, Sue Hibbard, Roy Peterson, Carol Garrick, Bill Beers, Fred Henkel, Mike Stewart, Steve Bennett, Ben Holt, Larrel Ulrich, Richard Birrell, Carolyn Jonas, Spade Cooley, Joanne Murano, Spence Clark, Keith Preece, Leona Jackimiak, Richard Smith, Smith Sumner, Tom Christensen, Barbara Jean Wright, and Bill Beagles.A more active interest in student government from the students brought the Senate to a more estimable position in matters concerning student affairs as they took importance of placement next to the exec council. |
