Clyde prepares for a day's work at the capitol.THE EDUCATIONAL BUSINESSMENGovernor Clyde, as head of the state government, is in the center of the University world, while President Olpin is not only administrative head of the University, but public relations representative to the non-academic world. These two men, businessmen as well as educators join together to form the governing head of the University. But both men are as interesting individuals as they are competent administrators. And like most successful men, they each have a personal philosophy, which guides them in their administrative decisions and in their lives.Governor Clyde is a man who has achieved, and will go on achieving personal success, happiness, and satisfaction through his genuine desire to help others. The Governor said, "In this complicated society, an individual cannot live alone or survive by himself; we therefore, must adhere to the concept of service. . . . We should help others, and in so doing, others will consider us." And this philosophy assumes a positive effect when Mr. Clyde says, "If I can open doors and provide opportunity to the others that come after me, I shall consider I have made a worthy contribution to .society."Born of pioneer heritage, President Olpin has always been chal-lenged to push forward in new developments. His experiences include "firsts" in television, in cotton textile research, in organizing and administering cooperative research on university campuses, and for the last thirteen years, in promoting education at its highest level in the state of Utah. And these are only a few of President Olpin's many achievements.President Olpin is married to the former Elva Chippman, whom he met when she was a student at the University. They are the parents of four children and they have eight grandchildren. President Olpin is very proud of the fact that his son, sons-in-law, and all but one of his daughters have attended the University of Utah.It is significant that both of these men encourage the individual student to grasp his educational opportunities and develop them to their fullest extent. For the students at the University, the Governor had a special message: "One should develop, early in life, habits which make work easy. In other words, one should learn to work and like it. If you develop the attitude that what you do is pleasurable, it -will-result in accomplishment."10 |
