Show - 161 - "What are you doing up so early?" She looked up to see Vicky standing in the doorway. Her hair was tousled and the belt of her robe was dragging on the floor. Her slippers were in her hands and she bent over and put them on. Claudine was nowhere to be seen. "I couldn't sleep and didn't want to disturb you, so I came down and prepared some toast. Want some?" smiled Penny. "I guess so," answered her sister. She sat down at the table and started to spread jam on her toast while Penny poured her a glass of milk. "Mama and Papa should be home in a day or so. I've missed them so much," went on Vicky. "Yes, it seems like they've been gone so much longer than they have," answered Penny. "I wonder what they will bring back for us?" At that moment Maddie walked into the kitchen. "Well, I see that I won't have to prepare your breakfast this morning, will I?" The girls laughed and Maddie went over to the stove and opened one of the lids to check if there was enough wood in it. "I'll have Tom replenish the woodbox." She then went into the pantry and got out the coffee pot and proceeded to fill it up with water and coffee grounds, then placed it on the stove to come to a boil. Later that morning, Penny put on a light jacket and tied a scarf around her neck. Again, she tied her hair tightly with a ribbon and went out into the garden. Tom was in the carriage house washing the Studebaker. He was surprised to see Penny take. Dixie back to the house when she attempted to follow her. The girls always enjoyed taking the dog with them on their walks, but apparently this was one time Penny did not want her along. It aroused his curiousity and he watched her open the little gate and disappear into the Eucalyptus grove.
