Show CHAPTER XVI - 106 - The first of May was the time for Maypoles and picnics in the Golden Gate Park, San Francisco's oldest and largest public recreational area. It's winding paths, little lakes, old trees and beds of beautiful flowers were a constant source of enjoyment to the Standish family. A visit to the art museum, arboretum, outdoor concerts and zoo never ceased to enthrall the girls. Long hours browsing through the corridors of the museum, observing and appreciating the great works of art from all over the world, were memories they cherished. Athena and Maddie, with Penny's and Vicky's help, spent the afternoon the day before the Maypole festival preparing a picnic lunch to be taken with them on their excursion. Potato salad prepared In the old Greek fashion, crisp lettuce and big fat tomatos to be combined with great slices , of Bermuda onions, cold ham sandwiches and a deep container of ice cold lemonade. Apple pies, especially baked by Maddie for the occasion, with strips of cheese spread over them and to top it all a big fat ripe water-mellon. All this delicious food made the girls' mouths water before they even arrived at the park in the Studebaker. Jim Standish looked as lean and slim in his tan slacks, slip-on sweater and white shirt as the day he married the beautiful Athena. He had fallen in love with the lovely young girl whose parents were determined that she would marry a man of her own ancestry. They were no match for the tall, blonde Englishman who won her heart. The day came when they acknowledged ' that their daughter had made the right choice. She looked charming in her lavender and white printed Jersey silk dress, with white shoes and wide brimmed hat, as she came down the stairs with the girls following closely behind. Each wore a pleated skirt and short sleeved blouse and carried a sweater in case the afternoon breezes became cool. When they arrived at the park, they found a place for the Studebaker |
