Show - 70 - It was not long before they arrived at their destination. The hustle and bustle of San Bruno Avenue couldn't compare to the hectic commotion going on the entire length of Market Street, the main thorough-of San Francisco, fare The tall office buildings and department stores, the crowds of people constantly brushing against one another contributed to the feeling of excitement. Along the street were the flower vendors with their gaily painted stalls boasting very kind of flower imaginable: carnations, roses, gardenias, begonias, stalk and even orchids. The abundance of colors was a veritable feast for the eyes. Both girls had to have a pretty posy to wear for the rest of the day. "I'll leave you on your own for the next four or five hours," said Jim.' "I have business to attend to and shall pick you up at 5:00 in front of the Emporium Department Store. Meanwhile, my dear, I'm sure you will be kept quite busy taking care of your needs as well as the girl's for the coming winter. I know that you'll all be quite hungry by then and we'll have dinner at Fisherman's Wharf." A kiss for each one of them and he drove off. The next hours were quite hectic. There was a long list and they were soon very busy purchasing various articles of clothing, shoes, etc. Across the street from the Emporium, at the corner of Powell and Market Streets, was the cable car turntable. Every so often a car would come clanging down the hill, bell ringing furiously and come to a stop. The conductor ed jumped off and turn the car completely around so that it could start up the hill again. The passengers then climbed on to the seats and waited for its departure. Both girls remembered how much fun they always had when taking rides up Powell Street past the beautiful St. Francis Hotel and the lovely exclusive shops lining the street. Over the top of Taylor Street, past the Mark Hopkins Hotel where the view of the San Francisco Bay was breathtaking. But this time they must concentrate on their shopping needs. |
