They would lose themselves amongst the shadows and wander over the hills picking wild flowers, lost in one another. It was almost as if they were bewitched by each other. As the years went by her parents became alarmed. They felt that Dirk was beneath their daughter in station. His family was very poor and they lived in an old dilapedated house a few miles beyond here. "Since Claudine was coming of marriageable age they even sent her back to France for a year. There was a young man that they felt was a proper match for their daughter. He came from a fine family of wealth and had a prestigious name. But it did no good. She returned a year later, when she was eighteen years old, and her love for Dirk was deeper than ever. She was determined to marry him with or without her parents' consent. They were just as determined that she would.never marry this young man of questionable reputation and background. "Yes, yes," both girls prompted him further. "What happened to them." The words tumbled over each other in their anxiety to hear more about the two young lovers. At this point, Tom stopped and looked towards the house. "Sorry girls, it will have to wait for another time. I hear Maddie calling me and I have to go in at once. You might ask her about the ghost too. She actually has a better memory than I have on these past happenings. I warn you, though, she was young herself and loved Claudine very much.
