That evening as the girls were in their room preparing for bed, Penny thought about Chang Lin, and again wondered how she could persuade him to help her find the answer to the mystery of why the ghost haunted Gaven House. But could she trust him? She was certain that his feelings for Dirk were as he very strong had told her that Claudine had betrayed the boy. She went to the old house and peered into the basement window and then waited until Dirk came out. By her motions the young girl could see that the ghost was alarmed and distressed. She was begging Dirk to stop the unlawful work he was doing, but to no avail.
