Everyone was occupied with their chores and completely ignored the girls this time. "It looks like Chang Lin isn't here today,"said Vicky. "Well, he's too old to work now and I suppose he's keeping out of the way of the others." replied Penny,. It was Interesting to watch the activity so they sat down on a grassy spot and, with Dixie near by, observed what was going on. "They certainly are industrious, aren't they?" said Vicky. "Yes," answered her sister. "Everything is so neat and the rows of vegetables are so painstakingly cared for." "look over in that little garden with the picket fence around it? Isn't that your friend, Chang Lin?" said Vicky. "Yes, the last time I was here he was working in there, too. He spends a lot of time with the flowers." said Penny. "Well, he sure tends them carefully. They're beautiful." responded Vicky. From a distance the old man raised his head and looked over at the girls. He gazed at them for a few moments and seemed to be contemplating whether he should acknowledge their presence. Finally, with some difficulty he arose from his knees, where he was pulling weeds from around the flowers, and walked across the bridge to where they were sitting. "Chang Lin, you remember my sister, don't you?"said Penny as a way of greeting. "I hope you're well these days?" He nodded to Vicky and addressed Penny. "Yes, I am as well as can be expected for a person my age. What brings you here today? Are you still trying to find an answer to the riddle? Is that why you are here?" "Yes, but I find myself blocked everywhere I turn," replied Penny. |
