Show - 36 - "Wait, what's this?" In one of the corners of the trunk, half buried beneath the papers, was a small box. She picked it up and slowly turned it around in her hands. Both sisters looked at it curiously. It appeared to be ivory and adorned with many little exquisitely carved flowers. It had probably been a music box as they could see the keyhole on the bottom of it were the key was inserted to start the music. "Do you suppose it belonged to Claudine?" said Vicky. "I wonder," replied her sister. "Well, we'll soon find out," She opened the lid and they inquisitively looked into the little box. It contained just two articles. A packet of letters tied with a ribbon long faded. On top of the letters was a locket, It lay there with its chain loosely spread out and Penny reached into the box and picked it up. She held it up by its chain and then placed it in the palm of one of her hands and with the other opened it. She caught her breath, for within the locket were two pictures. One, unmistakably, was Claudine. It was the same beautiful face as in the portrait hanging on the wall in their room. This was the same locket that she wore around her neck? The other picture was of a young man close to Claudine's age. What a striking contrast in looks! They immediately realized that this was a picture of the young man that the ghost had loved since childhood. Tom had certainly been right when he said that Dirk was so opposite from Claudine in every way. There was an expression of sweetness on her face, while he appeared pensive °r perhaps melancholy was the word to describe it. Certainly, he was a handsome man. His black curly hair was closely cut and his dark eyes had a compelling look. The small moustache gave his face an almost sinister look. The two girls were so intent on what they were doing that they didn't hear a slight russle behind them. Then a voice said. |
