Show - 18 - lamps were delicately filigred and the bases were mostly pretty hand painted Dresdin China ladies in hoop skirts or little cherubs. The high ceilings were complimented by the immense chandelier whose many little lights glittered and sparkled. Penny arose from the piano, walked to the French windows and stepped out on to the balcony. Beyond the garden she could see the wooded section just outside of the big iron fence. From a distance the old Eucalyptus trees looked like shadowy figures in the dusk as the wind softly moved their leaves. The full moon, which was just rising, cast an erie glow over the garden. As she leaned over the balaustrade Penny thought she saw a figure walking across the grass. It seemed to float just above the ground with a ghostly silence and even at a distance she could see it was a young and beautiful woman. The fragrance of gardenias was heavy in the evening air. The figure wore a long white dress and it fell gracefully around her ankles. The gauze-like veil draped over her shoulders trailed on the grass and her pale hair fell on her shoulders in soft curls. Where had Penny seen that figure before? Dress and features were familiar, but she could not bring her memory to focus. Strangely enough, she was not afraid. "Vicky come out here please," she called. Her sister came out on the balcony and leaned over it. "What is it, Pen," she said. "Do you see anyone out there?" Vicky peered nearsightedly, as she always refused to wear her glasses when she was supposed to. "I don't see way, a thing. Who do you think would be out there any a ghost?" She laughed gleefully as she said it. "Never mind, I suppose I was just imagining that I saw someone." said Penny. |
