Show - 37 - "Mademoiselle,That which you are holding in your hands is mine!" They whirled around and there she was. As Penny had already seen the ghost quite a few times she was not alarmed. However, it took an immense effort on Vicky's part not to faint from fright. The fragrance of gardenias spread throughout the attic. This was the first time that Penny hadheard Claudine's voice. It was low and musical, beautifully modulated and she could detect a very slight French accent in the pronunciation of her words. "Claudine, I'm glad you decided to allow my sister to meet you," said Penny. She's been waiting for sometime, haven't you Vicky?" She nudged the wide-eyed Vicky with her elbow. "Yes," whispered Vicky, almost inaudibly. No matter how hard she tried she could not utter another word. The lump in her throat was Just too big. Perhaps Claudine sensed this, because she withdrew »a small distance away and stood there contemplating the both of them. Penny realized that again she would have to take the initiative so said "I haven't seen you for sometime. Is it because I'm with my si3ter? Believe me, we both want to help you. If you'll just confide in us perhaps we can." For a moment the look of sadness seemed to disappear from the ghost's face and was replaced by a look of longing or maybe it was hope. Then she seemed to relax a little. If she Would only trust us? thought Penny. ''Mademoiselles, could you be the ones who will help me be united with the one I love? I have been searching for him so long. Sometimes the lonli-ness is unbearable. Will I ever find peace?" Claudine stretched out her hands imploringly as she spoke. "What do you mean? How can we help you? Believe me, we would if we knew how," said Penny urgently. Her sister did not utter a word, as she could not. |
