Yes, they would bury her old friend next to Dirk in the little graveyard that he had so lovingly tended throughout the years and she would come and care for the flowers as he had done for his son. All of a sudden she was tired. Tired beyond words and she sat back and waited patiently for the others to arrive. Penny knew that the hours of questioning and inquiry would be long and tedious, but she awaited them with passive acceptance. they 'The next morning were awakened abruptly from a sound sleep. "Wake up, wake up!" exclaimed Maddie urgently. "What is it?" said Vicky in a sleepy voice. "Your father and mother are on the telephone and wish to speak to you. They're in Chicago and enroute home." They bounded out of bed, put on their robes and slippers and streaked down the long winding staircase. Into the study and Vicky grabbed the telephone first. "Mama, Papa," she sang out in joy. "How exciting to hear from you. •Yes, yes, we're fine." Her voice had a doubtful ring and then she waited. "I know, but it's a long story. I am sure that Maddie has told you some of the details. Please come home as quickly as possible. We've missed you terribly. Wait, I think Penny can tell you much more than I can. I love you. Hurry home!" She turned and handed the phone to her sister. With the receiver in her hand Penny sat down on her father's big leather chair, pulled her feet up under her robe and took a deep breath. |
