Show - .68 - CHAPER X Jim was sitting in his study reading the paper and waiting for his family to come downstairs. He was going to take them on a day's shopping trip to downtown San Francisco. The girls came running down the stairs followed by their mother who walked slowly behind them. As she put on her gloves she smiled at their excitement. Her long wavy dark hair was piled on top of her head in coronet braids and the large brimmed hat decorated with pink roses enhanced her fine features. The beige knitted dress she wore was complimented by the fur thrown over her shoulders, and her shoes and purse matched her dress. Athena Standish was a very impressive looking woman. Penny and Vicky were wearing their favorite white sailor dresses with matching linen coats topped by hats with long ribbon streamers. Everyone was in a very festive mood as they had been looking forward to this occasion. With all the Guven House renovations it had been quite some time since they had been on a shopping spree. The Studebaker has been washed and polished. Its maroon color sparkled in the bright sunlight. The interior leather seats had been rubbed to a sheen by Tom. It was a big car with four doors and to the young girls it was luxuriously large. Dixie jumped and raced back forth as she was in the space accustomed to sitting/between the two girls whenever they went on drives. She wouldn't be going along this time as they would be In town all day. "Sorry Dixie, you'll have to stay home." said Vicky as she patted the little dog's head. The MacCarthys waved to them as they drove off. The commercial area of San Francisco was not more than ten miles away, but it was a special day when they embarked on one of these trips. They drove down the dirt road to San Bruno Avenue. There, the activity and bustle was in full swing. The old trolly cars were rattling along the center of the street and all makes of cars, new and old, were driving past. |
