Ce qu'il a écrit de 'Harmonie en douz Livres ,efttres-excellent. 1l compofa d'abord cet ouvrage en Latin , & enfuire i le mic en Frangois. Dans le premier tome , il traitee des fons & des mouvemens, des confonances , des diffonances , des genres , des modes, de la compoftion , de la voix , des chants , & de toutes les fortes d'inftrumens harmonieux, en expliquant la maniere dont ils font conftruits. Il rapporte des exemples de toutes {ortes de pieces de mufique; il montre en quoy elles different le unes des autres, & ce qui en compole le veritable caractere. Le fecond tom contient la pratique des confonances & des diffonances dans le contre-poin figure , la Mufique accentuelle , la Rythmique , la Profodie & la Mufiqu Frangoife; la maniere de chanter les Odes de Pindare & d'Horace. Il n'y eu jamais une recherche plus curieufe fur tout ce qui regarde la Mufique, a I'égard de laquelle il femble n'avoir prefque rien oublié de ce qui peut en donner une parfaite connoiflance. I a fallu joindre 2 une lecture prodigicufe d tous les Auteurs qui en ont parlé, de tres-profondes meditations, pour en ti |
