Show MADELYN CANNON STEWART SILVER 286 She has a way of making each individual feel important through her genuine interest in him, her sense of his worth, and the significance of his feelings and opinions. One cannot be in her presence without feeling inspired, without deter mining to be a better individual, without searching his own soul for its nobler aspirations. It would be unthinkable to be vulgar in her presence-vulgarity in its larger sense of being anything less than one's best .... Some so-called teachers simply lecture. Others go a step further and evoke their students to probe their own experi ences and express themselves in discussion. The master teacher, while doing these, creates an urge for knowledge, inspires his students to seek, and makes this desire so strong that behavior is changed, knowledge is gained and put into use in the students' lives. And all the while the teacher him self is inspiring by the example of his own greatness of soul. Such a teacher is Madelyn Silver. And yet so complete is her meekness, so deep her humili ty, so gracious her manner toward each individual, one would never guess her station in life. In her teaching, as in her personal associations, each word is well-chosen, each question, thought-provoking, each spo ken thought, inspiring. Whether with friends or before large groups of her students she portrays sereneness and self-con trol, causing her audience to feel at ease in her presence. The inherent role given her by the Creator as a woman, wife, and mother, she also accepts and excels in it. She is an excellent cook and well-organized homemaker. She accepts her equally outstanding husband as head of the household and is indeed a helpmeet for him. Her ultimate success as a mother is reflected in her four children, each of whom is just what would be expected as a product of such a home. Her home has a tangible feeling of peace, shelter, love, respect, and the Spirit of the Lord. In dress she is modest and unpretentious. Though she is wealthy, her wardrobe is simple and not larger than necessary for her needs. She shares with her husband the qualities of benevolence and philanthropy. |
