Show 146 MADELYN CANNON STEWART SILVER Jane Herrick Literary Club in the early forties. Madelyn is in the last row, far right. She was a charter member and one of the founders in 1936. lining the study for each year and by helping those presenting lessons to find worthwhile and interesting material. Her lesson plans were similar to those that might have been prepared for a university class in literature. She varied lectures with skits, dramas, songs, parodies, book reviews, puppet shows, and readings. One lesson each year was a creative "ama teur hour" consisting of poems, plays, and stories written by the members. Participants in each program were encouraged to "dress the part" and so there were costumes, musical instru ments, and other representative paraphernalia. The topic suggested by Madelyn for the first year was "Myths of the World: The Foundation of all Literature." The group studied Greek myths: Hercules, Jason and the Golden Fleece, Theseus, and Perseus; mythology of the Celts; the Courtship of Elaine from Malory's Marte d'Arthur and Tennyson's Launcelot of the Lake-she falls in love with Launcelot and dies for love of him; Deirdre, heroine of the old Irish tale of "The Sons of Usnachs; epic poetry: "Chanson de Roland, The Kalevala, and Milton's Paradise Lost. |
