Show -- EIGHT Teacher, Club Woman, Mother I On September days two war on 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland; later Great Britain and France declared Germany. World War II had begun. Although the United States declared itself officially neutral, discussions raged in the States on the merits of war. While a frantic program of rearma preparedness was underway, Russia invaded Finland and occupied Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia; Germany occupied ment and Norway, Denmark, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France; and Italy occupied Greece. The Battle for Britain began in August 1940; after three months the Germans gave up the idea of inva sion. As the Germans proceeded to occupy Rumania and began to invade Russia, the Japanese bombed the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, and the United States declared war on Japan, Germany, and Italy. Meanwhile, in the spring of 1940 Harold had purchased the interest of Fred Roberts in their combined company and had formed the Silver Engineering Works, Inc.
