Show 52 MADELYN CANNON STEWART SILVER should know how to entertain, how to work within an organi zation, how to be a good wife and mother, and how to be a good worker in the ward. Madelyn Stewart too dreamed of romance but, as both a sen sible and sensitive young woman, she also felt the real chal lenges of romantic attachments-learning to blend egos, to sur render freedom of action and ambition, and to begin a physical relationship. Some of this frightened her. Though she says little overtly, the style of her verse suggests her trepidations. Her love poetry thus forms a cycle that arcs from dreamy anticipation through enjoyment of young adoration to a break-up of her attachment when she felt depressed and defensive, and finally moving into a fulfilling, mature love. She would also find chal lenge in blending the life of the mind with the life of the spirit. |
