There were no aids to teach ers for this class, so Madelyn worked out her own outline, teaching the book in five parts: (1) From 1 Nephi 1-19, 600 B.C. Lehi and family leave Jerusalem and journey to the Promised Land (America). (2) From 1 Nephi 19 to 2 Nephi 5, 600 B.C. to 570 B.C. Lehi's death, Nephi's opposition from his brothers Laman and Lemuel. (3) 2 Nephi 5 to Omni, to 570 B.C. to 361 B.C. Nephites and Lamanites separate. Nephi's visions and prophecies. Nephi dies, succeeded by Jacob. Wars with Lamanites. Nephites teach Lamanites. Historical record "plates of gold" delivered by Jacob to Enos, to Jarom, and to Omni. (4) From Omni to 3 Nephi 11, 361 B.C. to A.D. 34. Continuation of wars between Nephites and Lamanites. Movement to Zarahemla, which had been founded by immigrants who had come to America at the time of the destruction of Jerusalem. Preaching, warring, murders, and kidnappings. (5) The account of Alma, from B.C. 91 to B.C. 53. This, presumably, is the first semester class; it ends with the coming of Jesus after his cruci fixion and resurrection. As a teacher at LDS University, Madelyn had a rich personallife. She had many dates, fell in love, fell out of love, and then had one experience that disheartened her. She fell in love with Caldwell Adams, the second "real" love of her life. (The first was Harold Lawrence, ne Harold Hoar). Caldwell the son of Thomas Adams, an attorney (then deceased) and Emily Caldwell Adams, a member of the General Board of the YWMIA and graduate of Brigham Young College in Logan and the University of Utah. This love brought to her, she wrote, "serene, inspired, lilting happiness."? She recorded a wonderful poem by Sara Teasdale that expressed her was feelings: Youth I am wild, I will sing to the trees; I will sing to the stars in the sky; I love, I am loved, he is mine; Now at last I can die! |
