"I must never," she wrote, "permit pressure to rule me again ever. I must remember how right everything seems when I'm relaxed, how happy Harold and I both are I believe keeping receptive to the ele mental will be the greatest help: the sea, the sun, the breeze, and .... all the beauties which are there to enjoy ifI but look. "17 Harold had been working on the completion of their new ranch home, and they were there for the first night on August 1, 1947. Here is Madelyn's diary entry: This was our first night in our new Ranch home. It was a disappointment that Harold could not spend it with us. I gathered our little family at dusk. We all sat around my new bed and chose what to do. Judith chose "Bless This House" and we sang it together. Barnard chose to thank the Heavenly Father for our home. We each prayed in turn. Then Elizabeth chose "0 Ye Mountains High" and we sang again." And the next morning: "The house when we awakened smelled of new wood, the sun shone in and we all felt refreshed from long sleep in our wonderful beds. "19 Madelyn was forever grateful to Harold for his work in designing and supervising the building of the ranch house. In a letter to him shortly after occupying it in August 1947, she declared: Harold, my darling, my sense of your achievement in building this house quite overwhelms me. This morning as I lay here looking at all the timbers, the wood design, the beau ty of our bedroom I felt very happy and proud. All the won der and joy expresses itself in the little plaque before me here. I can't thank you enough for your thoughtfulness and ten derness." May 4, 1948, was the eighteenth birthday of Elizabeth.
