Show -- TWO Joy to Gather My Share I Born shortly after the onset of the twentieth century, Madelyn Stewart witnessed the gradual introduction of the automobile, early flights of the airplane, the development of long-distance transmission of electricity and international com munication by radio; and the growth of the United States into an imperial power under President Theodore Roosevelt. The epoch of Madelyn's birth saw profound changes in the lives of those around her. Electric sewing machines, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, radios, motion pictures, the auto mobile, and the airplane made significant changes in people's lives. The declining threat of tuberculosis with associated dis controls removed major causes of death while there was simultaneous advancement of health measures. Indoor plumb ing and widely-adapted electrification contributed improved liv ease ing standards. The spread of Higher Criticism of the Bible mod ified American religious attitudes. The American victory in the Spanish-American War altered the nation's role internationally.
