Show 124 MADELYN CANNON STEWART SILVER After returning from the ranch, where they spent the summer, Madelyn and Harold rented quarters in the Broadmoor Apartments, in Salt Lake City. They moved out of Mama's house. Pregnant again, Madelyn spent the summer of 1932 at the ranch. She found it difficult to get over her father's death. She made many visits to the cemetery; for the next two years after his death her diary contains reminiscences about him and her love for him and his influence on her. In doing so she could not help but feel a little self-indulgence. After all, Harold's father, Joseph Askie Silver, had died February 11, 1930, and his moth er, Elizabeth Farnes Silver, had died February 26, 1925. Madelyn realized that, while she wanted to surrender to Harold's kindness, his courtesy, his generosity, and his chivalry, she also had an obligation to be mother-monitor and mother consoler to him. On March 9, 1933, Barnard Stewart Silver, named after Madelyn's father, was born. Little Elizabeth was not quite three. Madelyn's diary: This night our little son was born. Through all the years 1- have longed to be the mother of a son, to have the ultimate opportunity of seeing him live the life that Was denied me by the limitations of my womanhood! Now as I see this little strong face at my breast I realize suddenly that already his life is his own; that I can only love him and glory in him, direct him a little, but not control him." Most of the agony is past now My little son is so sweet and serene. Last night as I saw him immediately after his .... birth, he seemed so white and clean! His little cry was so lusty and I felt so jubilant. Tonight Harold and I were saying how fortunate we are: health, normalcy, a little son and a daughter and means to care for them. Elizabeth is so happy. Harold told her this morning of her little brother, and she said, "And a little sister?" He told her I had stayed at the hospital to feed the little brother, and she was satisfied. Two years ago today we said farewell to Papa's body.
