Show Mile High City 145 III During these months of introspection Madelyn and her LDS friends met in order to organize a woman's literary society. With similar educational and religious backgrounds, and with simi lar domestic problems and responsibilities, they thought it would be enjoyable and fulfilling to meet together on a regular basis. On January 11, 1936, fourteen women gathered at Madelyn's home, agreed to form a club, elected a president, and chose Madelyn to outline a course of study. They agreed to meet twice monthly, and to limit the number of members to thirty. In a subsequent meeting they agreed to name the club after Jane Herrick, wife of John Herrick, who had lived in Denver as president of the Western States Mission, 1909-1919. Upon his release he and Jane decided to remain in Denver; two of their children had married and were living there. Jane paint ed china and oils, was active in the Denver LDS Branch, and died shortly before the club was organized. The resolution to name the club for Jane described her as "a woman of rare intel ligence, charm, and understanding who was truly beloved with in the Church and without. "20 Jane Herrick studied art in New York City and Chicago, won many prizes for the china she fashioned and painted and for her school of dramatic art. In 1934 she won a trophy for her one play, "Child of the Manito." In church she led choirs, sang solos, taught classes, preached sermons, directed pageants and operettas, and wrote plays and vaudeville shows. act The listed purposes of the club were three: 1. To study literature and related subjects. 2. To encourage and produce original writings. 3. To aid worthy projects with kindness and material assis tance. The meetings were held in rotation in the homes of the mem bers. The club has continued to this day. As the number of Mormons in Denver grew, a Club Two was formed in 1950, and a Club Three in 1981. Although she did not serve as president until 1960-61, the club's twenty-fifth year, Madelyn made her contribution by out- |
