Show Joy to Gather My Share care 33 of one room for a month; cooked two meals, to include purchasing of food; played from memory five piano pieces: Gondoliers, Valse Arabesque, Khulah Sonatina, Aubade Pastorale; and the Sailor's Song by Grieg. She also memorized and sang solo five folk songs: Old Kentucky Home, Old Folks at Home, Flow Gently Sweet Afton, The Dearest Spot on Earth, and Annie Laurie. Nature Lore: Identified and described fifteen trees in summer; identified and described twenty wild flowers; identified and described twenty wild birds. Camp Craft: Tracked two miles; did all the camp cooking for one day. Hand Craft: Trimmed a hat; made a ceremonial dress; made pair of pajamas; made and embroidered a tea apron. Business: Earned $1.00 for purchase of Camp Fire outfit; attended cooking class four times a month for three months; earned $1.00 for purchase of Camp Fire beads. a Patriotism: Attended a church service ten sabbaths in three months; knew and sang all the words of the national anthem; told the history and meaning of the American flag; swat at least flies for one twenty-five every day month; helped to beautify her front yard; and taught a boy to dance the following American, folk dances: Virginia Reel, Portland Fancy, Lady of the Lake, Howe's Victory, Pop Goes the Weasel, Chorus Jig, Lancers, Boston Fancy, French Reel, German Hopping Dance, Varsouvienne, Furetur, and Gottland's Quadrille. Madelyn could very easily have moved up the ladder in Camp Fire Girls because of her work and experience at the ranch, in her mother's family, and in her school. But the church dropped the organization in favor of "Bee Hive," where the focus was not so much on diverse personal achievements as on the inculcation of church values and practices. Although use was made of symbols and "cell" requirements, capitalizing on and making appropriate use of methods and standards of the Boy Scout and Camp Fire Girls organizations, the emphasis in Bee Hive was on attending church, giving speeches, reading the scriptures, studying church history, and |
