Show 123 Chapter Seventeen Just when everything looked good, Mr. Courdelay showed up. For a minute there was great confusion at the park as Josh and Cap handed the gold up to the mayor. Everyone cheered and applauded and wanted to know how they had got the gold. And the mayor practically did handsprings as he handed over the gold bar to Governor Sirams. Mrs. Sutherland took the microphone from the mayor before he could get into one of his long-winded speeches. She made the boys come up and tell everyone how they had stolen the gold back from the phony detectives up at the Svendsen cabin. Which didn't take long, as tongue-tied as both boys were in front of such a large crowd. When Josh explained how Rollins was still stuck in the mine shaft in the Lucky Lady mine and Bixby had a hurt leg somewhere up Quartz Canyon, Deputy Wolsey squealed rubber for half a block in his hurry to get up there and arrest them. When the boys sat down, Mrs. Sutherland elbowed aside the mayor again to grab the microphone, "Citizens of Jericho, we owe something," she called but. "These two boys here have apparently saved this town from going bankrupt. And this dog. . ." she paused to reach for Chinook's rope, so that he came and stood beside her, "well, I admit a time or two he has been a nuisance, but he was a real hero in hauling back our gold for us. May I move that we as a town now give three cheers fb r Josh O'Tosh, |
