Show 75 Slowly they both turned toward the bound boy. Josh could see Bixby gnash his teeth and clench his fists. "I bet I know, don't I, kid?" •You mean him?" Rollins asked doubtfully. "No, the other kid he hangs around with. Right, kid?" He reached to give Josh's shoulder a hard shake. Josh gave an emphatic shake of his head, but didn't speak. No sense letting them know for sure Cap was out there. In fact, he hoped his friend was over the hill toward Abner Raintree's place by now. In the doorway Bixby glanced at his watch and swore. "Any minute he'll be here. Damnation! You stay here and watch that kid. I'm going to look for those sheets." With a sigh of dismay, Rollins sat on the hard bed by Josh. "Wow, you sure made a mistake that time. You were okay as long as we got away clean. Now-I dunno. Bix is an ornery cuss if he gets his dander up." The minutes dragged by as they sat there waiting. Josh could hardly move and his hands hurt. The door was ooen and he kept expecting to hear Chinook come padding back into the room. And he dreaded that, for Rollins might hurt the dog. At last they heard the helicopter in the distance. The man cocked his head to listen, then ran outside into the meadow, waving his arms. Cap must have heard them talking about the marker, Josh reasoned, and took the sheets away. Maybe it was smart. At least it kept the helicopter away, but . . .. Outside, Rollins was shouting at the top of his lungs. Josh could hear the chop-chop-chop of the helicopter maybe a mile away, xmaklnK circles eveq; another area. |
