Show 64 in Josh's voice. "In our cabin!" Cap said indignantly, but he was careful to keep his voice low. When Josh peeked around the tree again, he stiffened. Another man, the tall Bixby, had stepped from the cabin door and stood with Rollins. They were searching the sky for something. Frightened but intrigued, Josh watched from behind the stump. With all their other problems, they certainly didn't need to get mixed up with robbers-maybe even murderers. The thought of trouble brought his mind to Chinook. Where was his dog? If the robbers saw the malamute, they would know the boys were around. "Chinook!" Josh called in a hoarse whisper. There was no answer, no sight of the dog. At Josh's side, Cap shook his head in disgust. "If they see that dumb dog, they'll come lookin' for us." "I know, I know. I'll find him." Leaving his pack by the stump, Josh crawled to some brush, calling as he went. He peered through a bush and heaved a sigh of relief-the men had gone back into the cabin. He glanced back and saw Cap Mullins studying the cabin through his half-closed hand, as if he were peeking through a telescope. Crouched there on the hillside, Josh told himself that if they had any sense they-would take off running for town right now. What these robbers were doing way up here instead of being in jail, he had no idea. But Horace Wolsey and Mayor Okleberry would know how to take care of them. But Josh couldn't leave without Chinook. That crazy dog was bound to wander to the cabin, and the crooks might even shoot the malamute. |
