Show 73 'You want to take for a ride in the chopper and dump him out? Is that what you want?" Rollins voice was angry. "Well, we don't need that." Josh looked around desperately. The cabin had only one door. If he made a break for it, he wouldn't get half a dozen steps. Then, in a corner of the window behind Bixby, an astonishing sight caught his eye. First he saw some dark hair, then the good eye of Cap Mullins rose slowly into view. Josh looked away quickly, for he didn't want to give Cap away as he had done with the gold. But he was sure that Cap gave him a wink before the face disappeared. Josh sagged back onto the nail keg again. Cap was his only hope now. He thought of how it would feel to be taken up into the sky on a helicopter and thrown out. He shuddered. Oh, why did they ever think of running away to be mountain men? The troubles at home were nothing compared to this. The men argued some more, and Chinook kept pounding at the door- But at last the dog got quiet, and Josh wondered if maybe Cap had taken him off with him. Where could Cap go for help? Back to town? Too far to be of any help for Josh. Maybe Mr. Raintree's place. He had an old rifle on his wall. The men sat down at the table, hardly speaking to each other. They kept glancing at their watches. Josh sat silent, his mind racing with thoughts. He didn't want to be tied up here, but at least Cap could come and get him loose. But most of all he didn't want to get on any helicopter with these crooks. They could have the gold. |
