Show 29 any other building in town. It had been built with mining money at the turn of the century. This was the Sutherland place, where grey-haired Mrs. Sutherland ventured forth on rare occasions for one from of her elite garden parties. When she did, guests came/big cities all over the state. This was one of those times. Just then Mrs. Sutherland was flitting from table to table on her patio to keep her party running smoothly before the food was served, That is, the tall dignified woman was chatting with guests until one of her servants passed by, carrying a tray. Right before Mrs. Sutherland the man froze in horrified fascination, his mouth working wordlessly at the sight that met his eyes at the food table. The servant made a throaty squawking noise-and dropped the tray of drinks he was carrying. At this precise moment Josh and Cap turned the corner toward the O'Tosh home. A few seconds later, from the alley a half block in front of them trotted Chinook, tail aloft, head held high. "Hey, it's him!" shouted Cap. "Chinook! Come, Chinook!" Josh yelled, breaking into a run. On seeing them, the dog turned and pranced toward them, chest out, moving in the wolf trot that was his proudest gait. Obviously he was pleased with himself. As the dog approached, Josh stopped. The breath went from him. He gasped and sank to his knees. Cap stood in stunned silence. |
