Show 23 He nudged the other boys and they abandoned their sport to sit once more while the cellos groaned on endlessly. When refreshments were at last announced, Josh turned with a sigh of relief. Cap was already halfway to the long table when he stopped short. "Omigosh!" Cap shouted. Josh gasped. The chocolate cake, half devoured, sat forlorn atop its dish, with crumbs scattered for three feet in all directions. A grey buahy tail that everyone recognized was just disappearing back through the hole in the hedge. Mary Alice screamed and pointed. The three chaperoning mothers, leaders in Jericho society, came running with their hands to their mouths in horror. Cap Mullins stood with his hands on hips, groaning in disappointment. Mary Alice was in tears. She thrust an accusing finger at Josh O'Tosh and Cap Mullins. "My party's ruined! You did this-with that terrible dog of yours 1 Ohhhh!!" Tears streaming down her cheeks, she ran toward her house. Over her shoulder she yelled back at them, "I never want to see you horrid boys again!" They didn't stay for ice cream. Instead, Josh and Cap ducked through the hole in the hedge. They hurried down the alley to find Chinook before he caused more trouble. |
