"Them detectives sure took off-like they was chasin' the devil himself." Josh was chewing his fingers in thought. "Or running away." He grabbed Cap's arm. "D'you think they got the gold bar out of the mayor's safe?" "The detectives? You're crazy." "Why'd they leave like that, then? Who's guarding the gold?" "Maybe they was chasin' somebody." "Who?" Cap scratched his head. "Beats me. But they sure took off like a bat. We better tell somebody." n Josh looked at Chinook, who was now siffing a tree, and shook A his head. "If Mayor Okleberry sees Chinook here, he'll sure enough try to blame him for this." "Well, we better tell somebody." After a moment of indecision, Josh pointed to the city building. There was no fire, no smoke. Everything looked as before. "Maybe we better check and see first," Josh said. "See what?" "See if the safe's been blown up. At least we better peek in." With a grudging nod Cap followed along. Cautiously the two boys crept across the lawn toward the front door. There they put their noses against the glass to peer inside.
