Show 31 "I believe that's your dog, isn't it?" came her icy voice. Again Josh could only nod. He knew he should get off his knees and stand politely, but he couldn't move. Nor could he let go of Chinook's furry neck. The woman's face, tanned and lined with the creases of age, cracked into a deep frown. "Well, I believe that animal took something of mine!" Her voice was quaking with emotion. The front of her dress heaved with the deep breaths she was taking, and Josh knew she was really angry. Lowering his eyes, Josh scooped up the turkey and held it up. "Here, Ma'am. He didn't eat any. He-he was bringing it to me. Maybe we could wash . . . ." "That's worse, bringing it to you?!", she scolded, stamping her foot. "A thief is still a thief." She did not take the turkey. It was a large bird and Josh had a hard time holding it up. "Now get up off your knees," Mrs. Sutherland gave a disgusted shake of her head. "Oh, I'm so angry!" Josh got up. This time they were done for. Sure as shooting someone had already called the police. He looked around for Cap, but his friend had disappeared. Behind the woman the butler who had dropped the tray approached. He shook his.head in disbelief when he saw the turkey that Josh still held. Josh knew the turkey was getting him greasy, but he didn't know what else to do with it. "How wretched," sneered the butler- He turned to the woman. |
