Show 44 by the time they got back from being mountain men, he would have learned all that Cap knew. Shivering, he snuggled down into his bed. Chinook would keep his feet warm. There was a bump under him, probably a rock, but it wouldn't matter. Tonight he could sleep on nails, he was so tired. However, two minutes later Josh sat bolt upright. Something was shaking the trees just a few yards from where they lay. Something big! There was a snort, not fifty yards away, and Josh let out a little cry. He had slept in the mountains plenty, but he'd never heard anything like this. "CAP, WAKE UP!" he called, reaching to shake the other's sleeping bag. "Quick, Cap, something's coming!" But Cap refused to be awakened. He gasped and wheezed and covered his head when Josh reached to pull back the covers. Josh crawled closer, took him by the shoulders, and shook. "Cap, wake up! Quick, something's out there!" Finally, shaking his head, Cap Mullins roused himself with a the night yawn and a sleepy stare. The moon was down and / was pitch black. "Listen. . . something's coming this way," Josh whispered urgently. "Something big. It's shaking the trees." Cap pulled himself up on his elbow and listened. For a moment there was silence, then the cracking of a dry branch and the rustling of a tree limb broke the stillness. Cap shook his head. "Aw, it's probably just an' old porkypine. Go to sleep." He eased his head back onto the coat he was using for a pillow. |
