Show 45 Josh licked his lips. "It made kind of a . . . blowing noise a minute ago. Kind of like a growl." Slowly, with a groan, Cap sat up. He shock his head in disgust. "Criminehtly, it's probably just a deer then. You ain't no greenhorn, are ya?" He peered suspiciously toward Josh. "You know there ain't nothin' up in these mountains to hurt anybody." Josh felt properly chastized. After looking around briefly, Chinook had closed his eyes and gone back to sleep. "Well, what about a bear? Or a mountain lion?" Josh asked. Awake now, Cap was miffed. "Anybody but a tenderfoot knows that if that was a mountain lion out there, he'd be so scared bf us he'd be on the other side of Dog Leg Valley by now. And a bear. . . well, they won't hurt you if you leave their cubs alone." "Oh," Josh said in a tiny voice. Cap lay back down. "Now let's get some sleep. Tomorrow's comin' quick." In half a minute Cap was making a a wheezy little sound as he slept. Even Chinook began snoring. But Josh O'Tosh lay awake, the full weight of his situation upon him. A cold shiver ran through him. By now he was having second thoughts about all this. He didn't think he really wanted to be a mountain man anymore. Yet he didn't know how he could return home, what with Mr. Keebler and the mayor and even Mr. Courdelay so mad at him and so determined to get rid of Chinook. It certainly seemed hopeless. That's when the next tree, only a few feet away, shook with the impact of a heavy body trudging beneath it. Without a mistake, it was |
