Show 86 Josh nodded. Their path would take them across the dump of the Lucky Lady mine. It would perhaps keep the men from seeing them. "Let'g go then," Cap shouted. Chinook hesitated at the first steep incline below the trail. But with Josh ahead, pulling and urging him on, and Cap behind steadying the travois, they soon skidded down the first rock slide. In another minute they were scooting over the mountainside toward the old mines. Far behind them they heard a shout. They turned to see Rollins, his face shining in the sun, emerge from the trees, point at them and shout to Bixby and the pilot. The boys could only guess where Bixby had gone. A quarter mile behind them, Rollins began to scramble over the hillside after the fleeing boys. The sight of a man with a gun chasing after them gave new strength to tired muscles. Josh kept dreading the sound of a shot, for he knew that Bixby was somewhere trying to cut them off. As they scampered up the loose rock of the dump of the Lucky Lady, Josh could see Rollins gaining on them. He shivered at the thought of what would happen if they were caught. Grunting, he half pulled Chinook to the top of the dump. What they saw there jolted the boys to a stop. At the far end of the dump, cutting them off from the canyon below, Bixby and the helicopter pilot stood waiting. They could see Bixby wave triumphantly at Rollins. Now they were trapped. |
