Show 78 Chapter Ten Now the sound of the helicopter grew close. As Josh ran across the meadow, he glanced back over his shoulder. Rollins still had not seen them, but he was motioning fran tically for the circling whirlibird. It was just beyond the hill the boys had come down, and getting closer and closer. Behind a gooseberry bush in the meadow, the boys hunched and watched, their breaths coming hard. They had dragged the heavy gold across the clearing nearly to the trees. "Boy, are they gonna be mad when they find the gold's gone," Josh said in a loud whisper. "Never mind," Cap said, peeking through the brush. "Hurry, let's get into the trees." "Let's leave the gold," Josh urged. He had no wish to be caught and hauled away in a helicopter. And even the thought of being tied up again made him shudder. "No, we gotta take it with us," Cap said, setting his stubborn jaw. "It's too heavy. I can hardly lift this bag." "Well, we can drag it-come on, let's go." Again they took off across the meadow, the gold bumping along between them, hoping Rollins wouldn't spot them. Chinook ran alongside, occasionally taking a playful nip at Josh's heels. |
