Show 40 "I think you boys better stay right here," Horace said. "We got some questions we want to ask you." Josh shot a frightened glance at Cap. He knew the mayor had alerted the police to be on the lookout for Chinook. Maybe he and Cap were headed for jail along with his dog. Cap noticed the desperation in his glance. After a moment's thought, he suddenly pointed back around the side of the building and blurted, "There they are, Horace! There goes one of them now- and he's got a gun!" It was as if a bomb had been dropped under Horace's feet. Sputtering and sliding, drawing his pistol once more, he raced for the protection of the police car door. There he jammed himself inside. Cap caught Josh's arm and they took off running. Chinook, eager to be away, raced ahead, pulling Josh along on the rope. As the boys pounded down the sidewalk toward the bridge, they chanced a glance back. Officer Horace was just peeking over the car window past the muzzle of his drawn revolver. By now he had forgotten about them. |
