Show 12 But Cap laughed a lot and was friendly and hardly anybody minded the black patch he wore over his left eye. When he was only five some careless older boy had ruined that eye with a B-B gun. The leather patch seemed not to bother Cap at all, although some of the newer boys at school sometimes made fun of him. But only once. Although he wasn't big, Cap was a wildcat when he was taunted. No one ever called him "One-Eye" more than once. "Moon's up," Cap said now. "Want to go gig some frogs?" Josh sighed in his misery. "I don't feel like doin' nothin', Cap. I got some big trouble." "What?" Cap said with a grin. He seemed to like trouble. "My dog." He whistled for Chinook, and heard splashing from the creek. "Now what's he done?" Sourly Josh told about the mayor and the gold being knocked down, and Mr. Keebler's warning. Cap leaned back against the limb, scrunching up his mouth in thought. After a ainute he leaned over and peered down at Chinook, who was now digging by the tree. "I know what's wronfe," Cap announced. "You do? What?" "It's him," Cap jerked a thumb at Chinook. "He looks like a wolf-maybe even a bear. So people are afraid of him." Josh nodded. It didn't bother him that his dog looked like the pictures of wolves he had seen. In fact, the man he had bought the dog from had almost warned him. |
