Show 51 "Lucky for the town we came by the building right then," Josh said, poking the end of a stick he was holding into the fire. "Maybe they'll give us a reward," Cap joked. Josh pulled his mouth into a tight grimace. "Only reward I'll get is my dog in the pound, and maybe me in jail too-running from Horace like that." His hands behind his head, Cap leaned back against his pack. "Aw, we don't have to worry about that anyway. We ain't goin' back." "Never??" Josh nearly choked on a mouthful of cookie. "Well, least not unless we want to." Scowling, Josh gave a slow shake of his head. Already he had begun to miss home something terrible. He sat wishing Chinook wasn't in so much trouble. A new thought came and Josh raised his head. "Hey Cap, what if those crooks got away? The town will be broke." A grin creased Cap's tanned cheeks. "Wouldn't ol' Mayor Okleberry spit nails though?" With a grunt Josh stood and pulled on his pack. They kicked dirt on the fire till it was completely covered and no smoke emerged. Then they emptied half a canteen on the dirt, watching the hissing steam that erupted like a minor volcano. Josh knelt to straighten the harness he put on Chinook. In two canvas bags the dog carried part of his master's possessions. As the boys hitched themselves into their packs, Cap got a sly grin and cleared his throat. "By the way, Josh, what the ding dong was goin' on in the middle of the night last night? Why'd you wake me up for, anyways?" |
