Show Ill cautiously. He could barely make out the car tracks, but he could see where the saplings had been bent over by the passage of the Blazer into its hiding place. A magpie was scolding overhead in one of the cottonwoods, but nothing else moved. After a minute of studying the vehicle from behind a tree, Josh took a deep breath and, running low, skidded to the front of the car, which was nudged against a large tree. Still there was no sound, so Josh scooted around to the left front tire. With trembling hands he unscrewed the cap from the air valve on the tire. It would take only a minute to let the air from the tire, but he dreaded the loud hissing noise it would make. With the cap off, he was reaching to depress the air valve when the car springs squeaked. The car shook. Jerking his hand to his mouth, Josh gasped. Someone was inside. |
