Show 103 In astonishment they saw they had emerged a mile from where they had entered the tunnel. "Shhh," Cap cautioned. "They might still be around." They ducked down and peered over the rocks toward the clearing where the helicopter had landed. The chopper was no longer there. Jointly they breathed a huge sigh of relief. "They're gone," Josh said happily- "You think they got the fat one out?" Cap shook his head. "He's likely still down that hole." "Well, I'm not goin' back to see. C'mon, let's head for town." With a shake of his head, Cap wiped his mouth. "They're gone, all right. We might's well take that gold with us." Josh gasped in astonishment. "No sir, I'm not goin' back in that mine after that stupid gold. C'mon, Cap, let's get out of here." Patiently Cap squatted on his heels among the rocks of the mine dump. "Look, sometimes I don't do so good at school-but some things I can figger out." "What are you talking about?" Cap measured the sun against the sky. "Just this. In about three hours, the governor is comin' to Jericho to collect the gold bar from the mayor, right?" "Right. So what?" "So the mayor has gone and lost the gold bar, right?" Cap said with a wide grin. "At least right now he thinks it's lost." Josh pondered this a moment. "All right. So. . . ." "So the mayor is in a terrible jam. Now you an' Chinook are also in a jam-if'n you ever want to live in Jericho again." |
