Show 2A Chapter Four Mr. Keebler seemed to be everywhere. When Josh and Cap hurried down the tree-lined street in search of Chinook, the green dog-catcher truck went whizzing by toward the Okleberry party they had just left. As the dog-catcher van rattled past, Josh flattened himself against a board fence and held his breath. But Mr. Keebler didn't see them. Josh hoped he didn't already have Chinook inside that truck. Ten minutes later, when the two boys reached Fourth Street, the green van again roared across the street in front of them. "Sure as shootin' he's after your dog," Cap said. "I don't know where else to look for 'im," Josh said with a shake of his head. "Maybe the park. He likes to go there." The boys trotted toward the park then, making their way around the knots of people on the sidewalk. The town was crowded with visitors who had come to Jericho for the celebration. But when they came to the city offices where the gold was being exhibited, Cap insisted on going in to see it. Inside, there was a crowd before the table where the gold bar gleamed like some ancient treasure in its case. When the crowd thinned the boys edged forward. Josh leaned over to peek under the table to see where they had repaired the leg that Chinook had knocked off. Cap let out a low whistle at the gold. "Criminently, ain't that |
