Show 5307 Chaffin- D 3318 Q Would you call that a difficulty when Mr. Turner was pitched out of the boat? A It was amusing in a way; it wasn't serious; didn't need to have done it. I went over without doing it. Q I am afraid your standards of difficulties and mine differ just a little bit. A I guess that is right, too. Q Anyway, you got your boats through the rapids. About how many times did you portage? THE SPECIAL MASTER: The difference between you is, this man has been through, and you have not. A We portaged around three, I remember very well, carried our stuff around, put the boats over empty. Mr. Turner was a careful fellow, a man with a pretty good head on him. I tried to do as he wanted to do. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Did you adopt the method of going through rapids stern foremost? A No, I never did. Q Did Mr. Turner adopt that method? A A time or two. Q You have always had better luck going through with the boat pointed the regular way? A Yes. That is the way I tried to go with it, took my chances. |
