Q Did you have any difficulties from the San Rafael up to Greenriver? A The boat was a little long where it come over the riffles, where the drop is. The bow would jerk around and the stern come up, and left the wheel out of the water, and we would drop back, take a line ashore, just one man get her off in fifteen or twenty feet, so we could get in the water and go on. Q Was this boat equipped with rope or with cables to run ashore? A Equipped with a capstan, six- spike capstan. Q What kid of cable or rope did you have on the capstan? A inch and quarter, and in the line had four hundred feet altogether. Q Any place between Valentine's Bottom and San Rafael did you use that ? A we used it at Fort Bottom, ran on to a sandbar there at noon and didn't get off until evening; had to take the anchor out in deep water and take a few turns around the capstan |
