Show 5288 Chaffin- D 3299 the first, that was. Then, the next fall, we operated there and got our supplies -- Q Before you get on that, where you let it down into the Colorado river how far was that from the Klondike bar? A That was right on her, right down off the ledge, right into the Klondike bar. Q Did you have any other material with you, outside of your food and bedding, stuff of that kind? A We didn't have any lumber, or anything like that; just small stuff, like a few tools; probably carried in a scraper -- couple of scrapers or three, something like that, and a plow or two, and small things that you could handle on a pack horse. Q How did you get your stock down to the bar? A We took them down and swum them, went down the country two or three miles and swum them across, on one side, then back on the other, and back on to the bar. BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: Q Which side of the river is the Klondike bar? A On the west side -- the north side. BY MR. BLACKMAR: Q Mr. Chaffin, where did you operate in 1899? A In 1899 -- let me get this -- one year after the other it is hard to tell -- I have got it wrote down here, I think. |
