Tavernier worked in Paris and exhibited in the salons from 1819 to 1845. He etched portraits and genre subjects. In 1834 Tavernier had the distinction of having one of his aquatints, Le Singe cuisiner. (the Monkey-cook), refused by the jury for the salon. This work, which Beraldi judged "rather ordinary," caused an momentary uproar in the Paris press; the magazine L'Artiste rushed to Tavernier's defense, accusing the Academy of ignorance and cowardice.
