Show 283 (see Metzler, p. 76, for a reproduction of this painting [leaves on trees, possibly painted the year before?? Bodmer was in the area in September, 1834]). By the end of the year Bodmer was again in Paris, looking for etchers (Maximilian to Schinz, January 1, 1836). Himely, Hurlimann, Salathe, Martens, Rudolf Bodmer and Weber had all worked with Hegi and/or Meier, see Lonchamp #2667, 2063, 2066, 2069, and 2070. Hegi, in particular, worked with Meier and may have helped Bodmer to collect the etchers for Travels. 1836 Salon de 1836: Bodmer exhibits watercolors, under the title "Costumes de personnages indiennes." (Rene Delorme, Galerie contemporaine literaire artistique. Paris: Ludovic Bashet, 1879. "Biographies et Portraits"). There was a misunderstanding, begun by Delorme, regarding this exhibition. Delorme cites these as Costumes. Paris: Bertrand, 1836. However, the prints themselves had not yet been produced; it was a selection of watercolors, rather than the prints published by Bertrand, which were almost undoubtedly exhibited. pencil sketches: Portraits d'lndiens peint d'apres nature en 1832.33. et 1834. Pieqan Blackfeet Man. Image is the reverse of original watercolor (KBA #255). 4. Mato-Tope. Similar to original watercolor (KBA #317). paintings: Godesberg und Siebengebirge. watercolor, 31 x 44cm. (Mittel-Rheins Museum, Koblenz). on the reverse: "Original Aquarell von Godesberg / im Auftrage meines Vaters von / Karl Bodmer gefertigt im Jahre 1836 / verkauft am 18.9.1853/Ferd. Holscher / Coblenz." ( A plate, Siebenaebirae. was published by Holscher in Malerische Ansichten des Rheins und der Lahn and in Das Moselthal zwischen Coblenz und Trier. Publishing date for Malerische Ansichten is cited by Metzler as circa 1837 for the second edition. Rave notes a 1841 publishing date. There is some confusion between Lang, Metzler, and Rave over which illustrations appeared in Das Moselthal zwischen Koblenz und Trier and in Malerische Ansichten des Rheins und der Lahn. Since copies of these two books have not yet been seen, the confusion continues). |
