Show 152 has been omitted from the following description. 3. Source Information. It is by examining the changes made in the images as they passed from original watercolors or sketches through the various states of the prints that the documentary value of a particular print can be determined. Information gleaned from this method of examination can also be of art historical value, since information regarding the artistic and technical processes involved in production can also be deduced. 4. Reproductions. Contemporary reproductions of the images have been noted. This information is of interest for several reasons. It is generally agreed that Bodmer's aquatints and the reproductions of his aquatints in popular books and magazines influenced contemporary perception of the Plains Indian. Tracing which images were reproduced and the changes made in these images during this process can tell much about how this perception developed and was influenced by these images; it also provides a glimpse into the flourishing nineteenth-century printmaking industry. 5. Shipments of prints from Bodmer's Paris studio to the German publisher of Travels in Coblenz have been noted. These shipments represent only a portion of those prints actually produced. However, information about shipping dates, quantities sent, and the types of prints involved may provide some indication of when and why changes were made in the images. 6. System of identification. A numbered code was used during examination of the following two collections, to simplify identification of the different types of prints. The restrike states at Joslyn Museum, pulled at the time of sale of the collection, have been used to determine the last state of each of the print. University of Utah I a: Vignettes, black and white, bound within the German text of Travels. I b: Vignettes, handcolored, bound within the German text of Travels. II: Vignettes and Tableaus, black and white, unbound. Ill: Vignettes and Tableaus, handcolored, unbound. The Joslyn Museum. Omaha.
