Show 139 There are examples of prints on imperial vellum with a blue-tinted wash, used in preparation for handcoloring, that were never completed. One example of this preparatory wash, Tableau 27, Scalp Dance, has been located in the private collection of Mr. Jack Tykal, Salt Lake City, Utah. 62. In his final accounting to Maximilian, dated October 1, 1844, Bodmer listed a total of 31, 658 prints sent to Holscher; this included 21,452 black and white prints, 4067 chine colle, and 6,139 handcolored prints (Acta 1, nos. 156-158). By contract, Bertrand was committed to accepting seventy-eight sets of prints, totaling 6,318 impressions. Bertrand shipped a total of 12,282 prints to Ackermann & Company. The combined three editions of Travels had resulted in the production of 50,258 aquatints. (This total number may be slightly reduced, if Bertrand sent some of his own color-printed impressions and/or some of his black and white impressions to Ackermann). 63. Bodmer's relationships with Bertrand and with Ackermann & Company were equally strained. 64. Between the years 1837 and 1843 over two dozen etchers worked on the plates for Travels. See Appendix B, Etchers. 65. In fairness to Bodmer, it appears that the work he did on the albums and travelbooks had begun before he signed his contract with Maximilian. It is unlikely that he took on any new projects, after commencing work on Travels. 66. Unfortunately, neither a copy of Malerische Ansichten des Rheins und der Lahn nor Das Moselthal zwischen Koblenz und Trier has yet been examined. There is some confusion concerning which illustrations appeared in these two publications. It is known that Himley etched another of Bodmer's paintings, Ruine Stolzenfels. for one of these books. Ansicht von Coblenz. published by Holscher about 1837, was etched by Salathe, another of Travels' etchers. 67. In the shipment of April 3, 1839, Bodmer forwarded thirty-eight handcolored and five chine colle impressions of Tableau 37 to Holscher. On June 24, 1839, an additional twenty-two handcolored prints were sent. Another twelve black and white prints were went on January 22, 1844, completing the shipments to Coblenz. Holscher received a total of 367 impressions of Tableau 37, The White Castles. |
